Oshawa Community Legend Recognition Program Nomination Form Nominee Information: In support of Megan Bent
Name: Megan Bent
Address: 610 Beatrice Street East, Unit 112, Oshawa, Ontario, L1K 2J1
Email: meganbent97@gmail.com
I would like to nominate Megan Bent for an Oshawa Community Legend Recognition Award in
the area of Sport. Megan is an outstanding individual who gives her time, expertise, and energy
to others. I have had the opportunity to teach Megan in high school at O’Neill CVI, in a
leadership course and I also had the pleasure to coach her in rugby throughout her high school
career. I have seen Megan grow as a person and great leader throughout the past seven years. Megan is someone who is grateful for everyone and every opportunity that has touched her life
and helped her grow as a person. One way that she demonstrates her gratitude is through
giving back to her community and school. Megan has volunteered to help coach the O’Neill
Girls’ Rugby teams for the past four years. All of the time and energy she has dedicated to our
program has been when Megan was also working very hard to earn her Global and
International Studies Degree at Carlton University.
The players absolutely love Megan! They feel appreciated, worthy, and she instills confidence
in them as athletes, but more importantly as people. Megan shares her stories of playing
rugby at high school, University, and at club rugby through the Oshawa Vikings, an organization
that she also volunteers with. She teaches students to give back to their communities. She
does this through leading by example. She has inspired many students to never give up on their
dreams, to work hard, and to embrace every opportunity that comes their way. I have included
a couple of letters from past and present rugby players from O’Neill that will demonstrate the
impact she has had through her volunteer work with our teams.
Dedicating countless volunteer hours to our school shows how selfless and giving Megan Bent
truly is. She does not volunteer for recognition, money, or individual gain, she volunteers
because she wants to give girls at our school the same opportunities she had and to help them
become better people. She volunteers because she cares. She is the team’s biggest
cheerleader and is such an inspiration for our youth today.
Dedicating at least 50 hours a season is remarkable and commendable and we cannot thank
Megan enough for all she has given to our program. However, as she volunteers countless
hours to O’Neill, she is also volunteering in many other ways to our community. She has also
volunteered at her church and volunteered on the Dan Carter Mayoral Campaign in 2018/19.
For the past eight years she has been dedicating her time to the “Their Opportunity Charity”
helping with community events and fundraising initiatives. She has dedicated five years as a
dance instructor volunteer for under privileged girls and has also been a peer mentor at her
University helping first year students transition to University life. This just names a few programs and initiatives that Megan has given her time and energy to while volunteering as a coach with O’Neill Rugby.
A tremendous person, a dedicated student, a committed athlete, and an inspiring role model to
many young girls in our community, Megan Bent is truly deserving of the Oshawa Community
Legend Recognition Award for Sport.
Sincerely,
Dawn Manerowski-Aikin

A Letter from Saskia Scarce in Support of Megan Bent for the Oshawa Community Legend
Recognition Award
Saskia Scarce is an O’Neill student and rugby player whose life that has been touched by Megan Bent.
When Megan joined our coaching team in Grade 10 for 15’s rugby, it changed my perspective on what rugby could be for me and for my teammates. Not only did she teach us techniques and how to work together on the field, but she made us realize that there are opportunities for black girls in rugby. There are people on my team that only started considering rugby in post-secondary because of her. Megan was more like an older sister to the entire team rather than a coach. Like a sister, she would cheer us on from the sidelines, push us to do our best when we felt like giving up and gave us the advice to be better on and off the field. She pushed players to see their full potential
and taught us to be fierce. Being a good coach is about creating personal connections with your players and Megan did that during her time at O’Neill.

Letter from Paveenaa Suhanthan in Support of Megan Bent for the Oshawa Community Legend Recognition Award.
Paveenaa Suhanthan is an O’Neill student and rugby player whose life that has been touched
by Megan Bent.
Over the past few years of doing rugby at O’Neill CVI, I have had the pleasure of being coached by Megan Bent. Megan Bent was one of my favorite coaches at O’Neill because she knew how to connect with students unlike many teachers I've known before. One memory i specifically remember was before a rugby game, I was feeling particularly nervous about playing due to my small size and strength. However, Megan not only encouraged me and helped me feel calm but also made me feel confident about myself and helped me believe I could do anything I put my mind to. In addition, not only did she
help me personally overcome my challenges but she also helped the team by teaching
us new skills, giving us wise and encouraging advice, and being there for us during many
of our games and always showing support. Also, it was nice to have Megan as a coach
because she would always bring a positive attitude whenever she would join us.

Recognition Award.

Bent.
Coach Megan has made such a positive impact on our school's rugby team. She takes time out of her own busy schedule to be with us on the rugby field. Megan shares her tips and skills with all of the athletes, setting us all up for success. Not only is she an amazing coach, she is extremely friendly and always smiling. I have always loved having a conversation with her and got so happy whenever she showed up to our games to cheer us on. On behalf of our rugby team, we wouldn't be where we are today without Megan, and are so grateful so have her in our lives.

Durham College sold the most student tickets to the game and thus were asked to put forth a pool of candidates to be considered for the pitch. Out of the names put forth I was chosen for this once in a lifetime opportunity. Being selected was a distinct honour that amplified my commitment to excellence not only for myself but for those around me. This special recognition not only places me at the forefront of a significant sports event but also symbolizes a shared celebration of academic achievements and the vibrant intersection of education and athletics. I was told I was selected for my remarkable dedication to multiple pursuits in addition to my unwavering commitment to my college community and I really allowed myself to soak up the moment. When I walked out to the mound, this is what the announcer read about me:
“Megan Bent is a dedicated student in the Sport Business Management Program at Durham College, passionately merging academic pursuits with her love for sports. As a proud member of the Durham Lords Women's Rugby Team, and the reigning provincial gold medalists, she has learned the value of teamwork and resilience on and off the field. Beyond her athletic achievements, Megan serves as the Executive Chairwoman of the Durham College Student Association, advocating for the student body and uplifting them whilst fostering a vibrant campus environment. Megan’s journey embodies a blend of sportsmanship, leadership, , and active community participation, epitomizing the spirit of growth and empowerment.”
DCSA chairperson making the most of her final year
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: MEGAN BENT
In her three years at Durham College (DC), Megan Bent has just about done it all.
Currently enrolled in the Sport Business Management graduate certificate program, she’s already an Advertising and Promotion graduate. She’s a key
member of the dominant Durham Lords women’s rugby team that went undefeated last season on its way to provincial gold. And for the second year in
a row, she’s leading the way for the Durham College Student Association (DCSA) as executive chairperson.
Though she received a Bachelor of Global and International Studies from Carleton University, it wasn’t quite what she was looking for in a post-
secondary experience.
“It just wasn’t the right fit for me. I learn best in a get-your-hands-dirty kind of way, and neither high school nor university played with mud.”
Her search for a more tactile education led her to DC, where she immediately made herself at home both in and out of the classroom. She jumped into
student life by helping out at orientation events, and then successfully ran for the position of Media, Art and Design director on the DCSA board,
before the outgoing chairperson advised her to pursue the leadership role.
“Getting the opportunity to join the board, I really got to understand the dynamics of our campus, how the association worked, and the things that we
could offer to students,” she said.
Her smiling face has become a familiar sight on campus, and students know they can always approach her with their questions, concerns or friendly
greetings.
She credits her counterparts at the DCSA for allowing her to do so much.
“I get a lot of praise for the things that we do, but we really have a well-oiled machine behind the scenes. They’re always pushing me to be better.
They’re always taking care of me. I really couldn’t do what I do without them.”
Their support, as well as her own dedication and hard work, allows her to excel in class as well as on the rugby pitch. Now in her third season, she has
embraced a leadership role on the team. In the same way she guides new students as DCSA president, she shares the benefit of her experience with the
younger players on the team.
“When you’ve been on the circuit as long as I have, you have a lot of knowledge and a lot of insight,” she said. “I love playing with them. My team has
been amazing. We’re there for each other.”
Her dedication to DC yielded a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity last month, when she was chosen to deliver the ceremonial first pitch at the Toronto
Blue Jays’ College and University Night. Members of the DC ball teams gave her some tips, and when the moment came, she threw a strike in front of a
packed Rogers Centre.
“The stadium feels a lot bigger when you’re standing on the field than when you’re in the seats,” she said. “It was really cool representing our school and
getting to see the crowd.”
She will soon be incorporating her passion for athletics with her education. In her upcoming field placement, she’ll be working with the Ontario
Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA). She’s already well acquainted with the organization as a member of its Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
committee. Combining her multifaceted education with her love of sports would be an ideal career path for her.
Whatever her future holds, she knows it will be tough to say goodbye to DC.
“I’ll be pretty bummed because it’ll be the end of a chapter, and it’s been one of my favorite ones that I’ve ever got to write,” she said. “But then I also get
to start a new chapter, and so I’m optimistic that my next stage of life will be as vibrant and lively as this one.”

Through this interactive exchange, we aim to foster a sense of transparency, collaboration, and mutual understanding between the student body and the college administration.
